Virtuous Women: A Sister, Prophetess, and Leader in Israel

Miriam’s story is one of devotion, courage, and leadership. From the moment she watched over her baby brother, Moses, as he floated down the Nile, to her role as a prophetess and leader of Israel, Miriam’s life was filled with moments of faith and boldness. Though she faced challenges and even divine correction, she remained a significant figure in Israel’s history.
A Protective Older Sister
Miriam’s first recorded act is one of bravery and quick thinking. When Pharaoh decreed that all Hebrew baby boys be thrown into the Nile, her mother placed baby Moses in a basket and set him afloat (Exodus 2:3-4). Young Miriam watched over him from a distance and, when Pharaoh’s daughter discovered the child, she cleverly stepped forward: “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” (Exodus 2:7). Because of Miriam’s boldness, Moses was returned to his mother for a time before being raised in Pharaoh’s court.
A Prophetess and Worship Leader
Miriam’s role did not end with childhood. She later emerged as a prophetess, leading the women of Israel in worship after God parted the Red Sea. In Exodus 15:20-21, she took a tambourine and led a victorious song: “Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea.” This moment established her as a spiritual leader among the Israelites.
A Lesson in Humility
Despite her faithfulness, Miriam struggled with pride. In Numbers 12, she and Aaron spoke against Moses, questioning why he held a special position of authority. In response, God rebuked them, and Miriam was struck with leprosy. However, after Moses intercedes for her, God heals her, and she is restored (Numbers 12:10-15). This moment serves as a powerful lesson on humility and the importance of respecting God’s chosen leadership.
Honored as a Leader
Despite this setback, Miriam remained an honored figure in Israel. In Micah 6:4, God acknowledges her leadership, saying, “I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.” She played a vital role in Israel’s journey, standing alongside her brothers as a leader chosen by God.
Lessons from Miriam
- God calls and equips women for leadership (Joel 2:28).
- Worship is a powerful response to God’s deliverance (Psalm 150:6).
- Humility and obedience are essential in serving God (James 4:6).
Miriam’s story reminds us that faithfulness, worship, and humility go hand in hand in a life dedicated to God.
